Bernard Hill Career:
Hill initially gained recognition as Yosser Hughes, a blue-collar Liverpudlian man pushed to the brink by a neglectful welfare system in Alan Bleasdale’s BBC Play for Today show, The Black Stuff, and its follow-up series, Boys from the Blackstuff.
Hill was later cast as Sergeant Putnam in Gandhi (1982), under the direction of Richard Attenborough. Following that, he watched Roger Donaldson’s The Bounty (1984), which was the fourth depiction of the mutiny on HMS Bounty. Before that, he had taken on smaller roles in several British TV dramas, such as portraying Gratus in I, Claudius in 1976.
In 2015, he portrayed the Duke of Norfolk in the BBC drama series Wolf Hall, a role that earned him recognition at the BAFTAs and the Golden Globe awards for his portrayal as Anne Boleyn’s uncle and Cardinal Wolsey’s adversary.
In every movie, his solid build, thick beard, and aged face allowed him to portray authoritative men who confronted danger with hesitation, then willingness, and, ultimately, selfless courage.
Astin started by saying: “We adore him.” He was bold, he was humorous, he was rough, he was irritable. Boyd recalled watching the three films with Monaghan, stating: “I believe Bernard performed Tolkien’s words better than anyone else.”
Our condolences are with his family during this sorrowful period. Hill received acclaim for his raw depiction of Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff, a character who passionately begged for employment by saying “Gizza job”.
