The quarter-page commercial, which ran on Page 3B of the sports section, honors Slim Shady, Eminem’s devilish antihero figure developed in the 1990s.
In the “OBITUARIES” section, there is a blurb titled “Slim Shady Left a Lasting Impact,” with the subheading “Fans Will Always Remember the Controversial Rapper.”
The essay goes on to mention Slim Shady as “a rogue splinter in the flourishing underground rap scene” who was presented to the larger public on the 1999 hit track “My Name Is.” The advertisement depicts the character’s “complex and tortured existence” and his “sudden and horrific end.”
Michigan.com, the Detroit Free Press’s business arm, declined to reveal the source of the advertisement. The item is labeled “ADVERTISEMENT,” by industry norms for separating paid material from news pieces.
The emphasis on “Will Never Forget” in the new print campaign has fans wondering if a song with that title, or something close, will be the album’s first single.
