Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir stated that players were “close” to sitting out Friday night’s loss to Sydney after the terrible death of former teammate Cam McCarthy on May 9, 2024.
McCarthy, a former Docker and Giant who played 70 AFL games, was discovered lifeless on Thursday night and was unable to be revived.
A day later, McCarthy’s previous teammates wore black armbands on the field and observed a moment of silence before the game, causing emotions to overflow for some players like Alex Pearce and Nat Fyfe.

Cam Mccarthy Career-
McCarthy switched his focus to football after being the final pick in the Western Australia under-18 team in 2013, coming from a cricket background and excelling in both sports. After being inspired by a South Fremantle Colts coach, he decided to take the AFL pathway.
He had formerly participated in junior football at South Coogee. He gained recognition after a standout performance in the AFL Under-18 Championships, notably scoring the winning goal after the final siren for Western Australia against Vic Country in Round 4, but later sustained a broken leg in the last round against South Australia.
He came in top place in Fremantle’s goal scoring charts. He received a two-week suspension in round 15 for making careless contact with St Kilda’s Sam Gilbert. Surprisingly, he was also left out of the Round 23 team that faced Essendon.
His standout moment was in Round 4, when he scored a crucial late goal by toe-poking the ball into the goal square, securing a two-point win for Fremantle over Melbourne in Melbourne with just two minutes left in the game. In Round 20 at Domain Stadium, there was another remarkable display, scoring four goals and gaining 18 disposals against Gold Coast.
